Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Scan and Cancer Care

BMD Scan.jpg

A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan, also known as a DEXA scan, is a specialised imaging test that measures bone strength and density. In cancer care, BMD scans play an important role in assessing bone health, especially for patients whose cancer or cancer treatments may affect bone strength.

Certain cancers and treatments—such as hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or long-term steroid use—can lead to bone loss and increased fracture risk. A BMD scan helps doctors identify early bone changes, allowing timely intervention to protect bone health during and after cancer treatment.

What a BMD Scan Helps With in Cancer Care

  • Assesses bone strength before, during, and after cancer treatment

  • Detects treatment-related bone loss

  • Evaluates fracture risk in cancer patients

  • Monitors bone health over time

  • Supports treatment planning and long-term survivorship care

Common Cancer-Related Situations Where BMD Is Used

  • Breast cancer patients on hormone therapy

  • Prostate cancer patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy

  • Patients on long-term chemotherapy or steroid treatment

  • Individuals with cancers that may affect bone health

  • Cancer survivors requiring ongoing bone monitoring

What to Expect During a BMD Scan

  • The scan takes about 10–20 minutes

  • You lie comfortably on a scanning table

  • The procedure is painless and non-invasive

  • No injections or contrast dye are required

  • Very low radiation exposure

Safety and Suitability

BMD scans use very low-dose X-rays and are generally safe. They are suitable for most patients and are commonly recommended for individuals undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment. Pregnant women should inform the radiographer before the scan.
