At Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre, we believe that every patient deserves treatment that is safe, effective, and tailored to their needs. Cancer treatment today is more advanced than ever — combining medical expertise with modern technology to improve outcomes and quality of life. Our multidisciplinary team works closely with patients and their families to create an individualised treatment plan based on:

  • The type of cancer Stage and spread

  • Genetic and molecular features

  • Patient’s overall health

  • Personal preferences

We explain every step of the treatment journey so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

Our Cancer Treatment Services

1. Surgery

Surgery plays a major role in many types of cancer. It may be used to:

  • Remove tumours

  • Confirm a diagnosis (biopsy)

  • Relieve symptoms

  • Reduce tumour size before other treatments

Our surgical team collaborates with oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to ensure safe and precise care.

2. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses medications to target and destroy cancer cells. It may be given:

  • Before surgery (neoadjuvant)

  • After surgery (adjuvant)

  • Together with radiotherapy

  • As the main treatment for advanced cancers

We monitor your blood tests, organ functions, and side effects closely to ensure your comfort and safety.

3. Radiation Therapy

(Radiotherapy) Radiotherapy uses high-energy beams to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours. It is precise, safe, and can often preserve normal tissues. (See detailed Radiotherapy page below.)

4. Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy works by blocking specific genes, proteins, or pathways that cancer cells need to grow. These treatments generally cause fewer side effects than chemotherapy.

5. Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy strengthens your immune system so it can recognise and destroy cancer cells more effectively. It has transformed the treatment of several cancers, including lung, melanoma, and some blood cancers.

6. Hormone Therapy

Used for cancers that rely on hormones — such as breast cancer or prostate cancer — by reducing or blocking hormone production.

Radiotheraphy

Radiotherapy (radiation therapy) uses carefully targeted high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues. About 50–60% of cancer patients benefit from radiotherapy at some point — either as a cure, symptom relief, or part of a combined treatment plan. At Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre, our radiotherapy team ensures that each patient receives safe, accurate, and personalised treatment using state-of-the-art technology.

How Radiotherapy Works

Cancer cells divide quickly and are more vulnerable to radiation. Radiotherapy damages their DNA, stopping their ability to grow and causing the tumour to shrink. Healthy cells can repair themselves better than cancer cells, which allows side effects to remain manageable and temporary for most patients.

Types of Radiotherapy

1. External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) The most common form of radiotherapy, delivered from a machine outside the body (LINAC). We use advanced techniques such as:

  • IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy) Radiation beams are shaped and controlled to match the tumour, reducing exposure to healthy tissue.

  • IGRT (Image-Guided Radiation Therapy) Real-time imaging before each session ensures maximum accuracy.

  • VMAT / RapidArc Delivers treatment in a continuous arc, resulting in faster, more precise sessions.

  • SBRT / SRS (Stereotactic Body & Stereotactic Radiosurgery)

Very high-dose radiation focused on small, well-defined tumours in the brain, lung, spine, and liver — with minimal sessions.

2. Brachytherapy (Internal Radiation)

Radioactive material is placed inside or very close to the tumour. Used commonly for cervical, prostate, and some head & neck cancers. (Optional — only include if your centre offers it.)

When Is Radiotherapy Used?

  • Curative treatment for many localised cancers

  • Before surgery to shrink tumours

  • After surgery to kill remaining cancer cells

  • Combined with chemotherapy for certain cancers

  • Palliative care to control pain, bleeding, or symptoms

Your oncologist will recommend the best approach based on your cancer type and stage.

What to Expect During Treatment

1. Consultation & Planning

  • Review of your scans

  • Meeting with radiation oncologist

  • Discussion of goals, side effects & expected outcomes

2. Simulation (CT Planning Scan)

  • A special CT scan is performed to map out your treatment

  • Custom immobilisation devices may be used to help you stay in position

3. Treatment Sessions

  • Painless and quick (usually 10–20 minutes)

  • You will not feel or see the radiation

  • You can go home immediately after each session

4. Follow-Up Care

  • Regular monitoring

  • Side effect management

  • Recovery guidance and support
